Do I Have Gum Disease?

One in three adults has some form of periodontitis, or a bacterial infection of the gums. Left untreated, advanced periodontitis can lead to tooth loss, weakening of the jawbone and even contribute to and/or complicate other health issues such as heart disease. The good news: even advanced stages of gum disease can be treated and the effects reversed.

What Causes Gum Disease

Bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film, constantly forms inside your mouth, lodging in pockets between your gums and teeth. Left untreated, the plaque forms into a hard surface called tartar in less than two days, spreading bacteria that causes redness, tenderness and inflammation.

Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits are usually enough to stop the spread of the disease. Left untreated, however, the infection can spread rapidly to surrounding tissue.

Are All Gum Diseases the Same?

No, there are many types of gum disease including:

• gingivitis, the most mild and the most common form;
• chronic periodontitis, a persistent, imbedded infection characterized by bone
  loss, receding gums, bleeding and soreness;
• aggressive periodontitis, an advanced infection found in preteens and young adults;
• systemic periodontitis, a condition associated with one or more systemic
  diseases such as diabetes;
• and necrotizing periodontitis, a severe form of ther disease commonly seen in
  patients with auto-immune disorders (such as HIV) and malnutrition but also
  common among smokers and people with poor oral hygiene.

How Do You Treat Gum Disease?

The best cure for gum disease is prevention. Good oral hygiene at home and regular visits to your general dentist usually prevent and/or reverse the most common forms.

However, when periodontitis is allowed to advance, more aggressive treatment is necessary. Dr. Lim will diagnose and discuss a personal treatment plan based on your particular needs.
